Costa Rica: Sunrises and Sunsets

“In the twilight of the morning, all life silently waits for the sunrise.                                                  Sun must rise for darkness to sink.”

~ Mehmet Murat Ildan

Oceanside sunrise in Costa Rica is a dependably sacred and magnificent event, with the only requirement being that one wakes up in time. Pre-sunrise is especially magical, as the emerging light changes color by the moment.

And then there are the Costa Rican sunsets. An opportunity to bear witness to day’s end, and stunning descent into darkness.

Because of my sister’s vision (and ability to manifest it), I’m traveling along for a month in Costa Rica. She’ll be leading two week long retreats, and we’ll do some traveling in between and after. Here’s the link to her blog, and her pre-retreat thoughts:

We’ve arrived in Playa Hermosa near Jaco a few days early, an opportunity to acclimate, get our bearings, check out details related to the retreat, and enjoy some beach time.

We wander into the town of Jaco, and find a spot to enjoy the  day’s sunset. A DJ has set up shop facing west, ready to accompany the event with electronica:

A sunset soundtrack unplanned for, but in the moment it worked just fine.

Returning to Costa Rica for the third time, I notice how quickly and easily one can slip into Costa Rican sensibilities, where the beauty that surrounds is insignificantly compromised by small inconveniences. Like pot-holes in the roads and power outages. ATMs that don’t always work and ant invasions.

But a most perfect place for yoga retreating framed by the daily beauty of sunrise and sunset….. so grateful to be here once again!

  1. So nice, Ellen. Both the writing and the photographs. I do so love and miss the Caribbean. Especially in these northern hemisphere winters. One winter, I lived on St. Lucia in the Lower Antilles and once on Isla Mujeres off the Mexico coast. And once I lived in Hawaii for a year. But the Caribbean water is the best!
    Have a wonderful time.

    • Dear Janet….. How did I not see this reply? Another one of Costa Rica’s inconveniences: scant and undependable internet! Your kind comment, and to know you also have enjoyed a winter’s respite from the intensity of our northern climate…. thank you for sharing your thoughts with me. They’re inspiration and encouragement to “keep at” writing, and very much appreciated.
