Costa Rica: Sunrises and Sunsets

“In the twilight of the morning, all life silently waits for the sunrise.

Sun must rise for darkness to sink.”

Oceanside sunrise in Costa Rica is a dependably sacred and magnificent event, the only requirement being that one wakes up in time. Pre-sunrise is especially magical, as the emerging light changes color by the moment.

And then there are the Costa Rican sunsets. An opportunity to bear witness to day’s end, and stunning descent into darkness.

My sister Carrie and I have returned here for a 5 week stay.  We are beginning with two weeks in Jaco, where we’ve rented a little apartment within footsteps of the beach. Carrie will be going to language school and I’ll be working on writing and photo projects. After this, Carrie is leading her third weeklong yoga retreat at Vida Asana, where we’ll be joined by family and friends. Here’s a link to Carrie’s pre-retreat thoughts.

Our final time here will be spent traveling and exploring the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, an area we have never visited.

We wander into the town of Jaco, and find a spot to enjoy the day’s sunset. A DJ has set up shop facing west, ready to accompany the event with electronica:

A sunset soundtrack unplanned for, but in the moment it works just fine.

Returning once again to Costa Rica, I notice how quickly and easily one can slip into Costa Rican sensibilities, where the beauty that surrounds is insignificantly compromised by small inconveniences. Like pot-holes in the roads and power outages. ATMs that don’t always work and ant invasions.

But a perfect place for learning, creating, reflecting and yoga-retreating, framed by the daily beauty of sunrise and sunset….. so grateful to be here once again!
